Matt Porter has been associated with every aspect of band there is. Mr. Porter is now beginning his 4th year at Collins High School as the Director of Bands. He was Collins High School Teacher of the Year for 2019. Mr. Porter has been a performer, private teacher, percussion clinician, and business man for over 30 years. He was the sales manager of Roseberry Music Company for 9 years and the band representative for Wright Music Company for 6 years. He began his teaching career in 2006 at Enterprise High School as the interim Band Director. Mr. Porter then spent 2007-2009 as Assistant Band Director at West Jones High School in Laurel, MS. From 2009-2013, he was the head Band Director at North Forrest High School in Hattiesburg, MS and then 2014 as Director of Band for Dixie Attendance Center and South Forrest Elementary School. He is also the father of daughter Elizabeth who is a former LSU Tiger Girl. Mr. Porter graduated from Oxford High School in Oxford, MS. He graduated from the University of Mississippi in Oxford, MS with honors with a Bachelors of Music Education. He received his Masters of Music Education from the University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg, MS. Mr. Porter continues to be an active performer, clinician, judge, and conductor throughout the south. His wife Dawn, daughter Elizabeth, and their dog Dixie all live in Hattiesburg.
Mr Porter's Rules:
1. You are not allowed to hurt yourself, anybody else, or the equipment.
2. No gum, food, or sugary substances.
3. Be On Time. (to arrive and to leave)
4. NO DRAMA!!! NO EXCEPTIONS!!!
5. New Rules may be added as needed.
a. No cell phones during class.
b. Don't touch the thermostat.
c. If it is not okay for the teacher to say; it is not okay for a student to say.
d. No questions that start with "What if...?".
e. The bell does not dismiss students. The teacher dismisses students.
6. Not everything goes according to plan. Plans change. Be flexible.
7. Do not say or do anything that might get you, me, or someone else in trouble.
You need everyday:
1. Pencil. No pens.
3. Instrument and music stand (Band students only)
4. Good attitude
